Texas Highway 6 runs alongside the railway from Galveston and there are lots of level-crossings that provide shooting locations for budding photographers. The trains also meander along at a respectable pace so that budding the photographer can take a few shots then jump in the car and race ahead of the train to the next location. This shot was taken at the track-side just west of Santa Fe, Texas.
Rail appears to be making a come-back in this part of the US, spurred by the shale oil production in south Texas and as an alternative to pipelines for heavy Canadian crude that is processed in Gulf Coast refineries. Several long stretches of single-line track are being paralleled but it remains ot be seen if this activity will continue if oil prices languish in the mid $40s.
